Mac OS X; Keyboard Shortcuts You Might Not Know


Cmd-O opens the selected folder in the Finder.
Shift-Cmd-N creates a new folder in the current directory.
Cmd-J opens the View Options panel, where you can tweak settings for how a specific folder appears in the Finder, such as icon size.

Mac OS X; Empty iLife's Trashes to Free Up Space


When you delete pictures and movies, they go into iPhoto’s Trash—located in iPhoto’s sidebar—where they remain until you Control (right) click on Trash and choose Empty Trash (Similar in iMovie and Mail etc).

Ctrl-Cmd-D displays a popup dictionary for a selected word. Just hover over the word with the cursor and hit the shortcut. Useful for quick definitions.

Mac OS X; WWF Document Format Makes You Save Paper


Mac OS X: PDFs are great, but constantly printing out endless amounts of documents wastes a heck of a lot of paper. The World Wildlife Federation has created their own PDF format that is unprintable in an effort to end that.
Right now, the file format is only savable and readable on Macs, but a Windows version is coming soon. The software is a plugin that allows you to save anything as a WWF file from the print menu in Mac OS X. It's basically the exact same thing as a PDF, except you can't print it out. Tip; Use Spotlight as a Reference Tool

Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.

Tip; Keyboard Shortcuts at Mac OS X Startup

Here's a list from Apple's own keyboard shortcut documentation and personal experience:

-X during startup - Force Mac OS X startup
-Option - (eventually) brings up a screen with startup volume choices
-Option-Command-Shift-Delete - Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)
-C - Start up from a CD that has a system folder
-N - Attempt to start up from a compatible network server (NetBoot)
-T - Start up in FireWire Target Disk mode (very handy for plugging your Mac into another as an external hard drive)
-Shift - start up in Safe Boot mode and temporarily disable login items and non-essential kernel extension files (Mac OS X 10.2 and later)
-Command-V - Start up in Verbose mode.
-Command-S - Start up in Single-User mode
-cmd-opt-p-r - Zap PRAM. Hold down until second chime.
-cmd-opt-n-v - Clear NV RAM. Similar to reset-all in Open Firmware.
-cmd-opt-o-f - Boot into open firmware
-Hold mouse click - Force eject a CD/DVD
